Etchmiadzin cathedral, one of the oldest churches in the world, was originally built by St. Gregory the Illuminator ca 301 AD at which time Armenia was the only country in the world with Christianity as its official state religion. Evidently this cathedral has undergone many changes over 1700 years. The inside of the box is decorated with the rtist's rendition of a 'Khatchkar" (hand carved stone cross) some of which are still in existence and in the surrounding gardens of the cathedral.
